If you’re carrying a bit of extra baggage around your midsection and want to get rid of it, it’s time to get serious about exercising.  As men and women get older and go through life changes, it becomes harder to get a flat stomach or a six-pack.

We work so hard performing ab exercises and the only result we seem to get is a sore back with no signs of a flat, well defined stomach in sight.  These spot reducing exercises that target a specific area do not provide results.  In order to eliminate your belly, you need to focus on your diet and an overall body workout.  The following ab specific exercises will help you reach your goal along with proper diet and full body conditioning.

The most common and basic ab exercise that everyone knows how to do is a crunch.  To perform a crunch, place your arms behind your head for support.  Raise your shoulders up off the ground and hold for a couple of seconds.  Remember to keep your chin up.  Do this in three sets of twenty three times a week.  You will need to stretch your hips prior to performing crunches because your hips and legs will be used to keep your body stationary against the ground.

A crest posture exercise is similar to a push-up.  Position yourself on your stomach with your bent elbows and toes propping you up in a plank position.  Keep your body aligned.  Hold this form for thirty seconds.  As you get more comfortable with the pose, try to hold it longer.

Reverse crunches start off in a sitting position.  Sit straight up with your knees bent.  Cross your arms in front of you.  Slowly lean your body back while keeping your back straight.  Try to go as far back as possible.  You will feel a pull in your stomach.  Do five reps.

This next exercise is a simple as breathing.  When stretching, keep your body straight and erect.  Focus on expanding and contracting your stomach and chest muscles.

As with any exercise, it is advised to perform them cautiously.  Do not over exercise your abs on the first day or week.  Build up your stamina and as your body becomes more conditioned, it will be able to perform more.  Do not target one specific area when trying to lose weight.  Effective weight loss is an overall process.  Never starve yourself.  Your body needs the proper amount of nutrients to produce energy and build muscle.
