Tips For Choosing Yoga Training Courses

May 19, 2009

yogatranningThe practice of Yoga in America has grown phenomenally over the past 40 years. Along with this growth have come issues of quality and authenticity that can sometimes trip up prospective yoga students.

The first question a prospective Yoga student should ask is what kind of Yoga they wish to pursue. More yoga methods are available today than ever before. Some continue with older traditions, such as Hatha Yoga, including styles introduced by teachers such as Iyengar.

Other Yoga styles were created by synthesizing various methods. Still other Yoga styles, such as Bikram Yoga, emerged through adaptation to Western preferences and lifestyles

For instance, while Yoga asanas have long been considered to be in “public domain,” Bikram has copyrighted the poses associated with his method.

So a prospective Yoga student should consider carefully which style they prefer. The next question is whether the preferred style is taught in one’s area, and how well it’s taught.

For instance, are local Yoga schools and/or instructors accredited by some recognized authority, such as the American Yoga Association? What are the standards for qualification? Does the association require periodic continuing education in order to maintain accreditation?

It also might be wise to visit a few classes before deciding upon a longer commitment. Observe how the instructor teaches. Does he or she keep a close eye on how the students are performing, and make corrections promptly and appropriately?

How clean and well-kept is the facility? Is the facility well-equipped? Are their first-aid supplies in case of accident or injury? Even though yoga poses typically do not cause injury, mistakes can happen, especially among beginners who have not yet mastered their bodies, or who still adhere to the Western attitude of “no pain, no gain.” One should never feel pain performing Yoga.

Another consideration might be whether a certain Yoga style or school is integrated with other holistic health practices. For instance, the Japanese style known as Ki yoga includes adherence to a macrobiotic diet and shiatsu massage as part of its regimen.

Finally, for some prospective students there is the question of cost. Many public recreation centers these days offer Yoga classes (typically Hatha Yoga) for very low cost. These can be a good place for a beginner to get started with Yoga.

After some months, or even years, as a Yoga practitioner, a student may find that he or she would like to become a Yoga instructor. The process of evolving into a Yoga teacher is much the same as choosing one’s first Yoga class. While many benefit from studying abroad, it’s entirely possible to find qualified Yoga trainers in one’s own country.

Just as Yoga itself has been described as a process of evolution, so is the process of training to become an instructor. With care and attention, a serious student of Yoga can find that an entirely new career awaits.
