The Truth about Bodybuilding

March 31, 2009

truth-about-bodybuildingIf you have decided to commit to a bodybuilding program, you will need to get advice from those who are more experienced.  When you are seeking advice, be careful who you get it from.  As the interest in bodybuilding takes off, more and more so-called bodybuilding websites are popping up.  These websites claim that they know everything about bodybuilding but in all reality, they have very little or no professional experience.  They could lead you towards taking pills, powders and miracle muscle building drugs.  If you are not careful, you could be lured into any of the many myths that revolve around bodybuilding.  This article covers four of the biggest bodybuilding myths and sets the record straight.

The first big bodybuilding myth is that the only way to build more muscles is to get a greater pump while you are working out.  If you don’t know what is meant by the word pump, it refers to the sensation you get when your muscle tissues are filled to the maximum with blood.  What happens is that your muscles swell and your body looks temporarily bigger.  This does not lead to permanent muscle growth.  The amount of blood that flows to your muscle does not determine how large your muscles get and how successful you become at building muscle.  Your success is determined by your progression in the amount of weight that you lift and the number of repetitions you can complete.

The second myth states that the more muscles you have the slower you become.  This is without a doubt untrue.  As you build more lean muscle mass, your speed can increase and you will become more agile.  You muscles help you perform every action.  The stronger your muscles are, the easier it is for you to perform a movement.

The third myth is that you must always use the perfect form illustrated in guides when exercising.  While form is important to exercising, you do not need to obsess over it.  Many times these textbook descriptions have our bodies moving in unnatural ways and this can cause injuries.  You need to be able to naturally move through a movement while holding onto the weights.

The last myth is that in order for your muscles to grow you need to “feel the burn”.  Wow, what a misconception this is.  The burn that they are referring to is a sensation your muscle gets when there is a buildup of lactic acid in the muscle tissue.  Lactic acid does not build more muscle and could in fact hinder your ability to grow strong.  You can reduce the amount of lactic acid buildup by doing fewer repetitions in each set.
