The South Beach Diet

South beach diet, invented by Arthur Agatston, M.D., is a boon for overweight cardio patients. This diet makes the weight loss process easy and more effective. Initially, you lose 8-13 ponds then you continue to drop one to two pounds per week till you reach the desired or ideal weight. This diet is cardiovascular system friendly and it is also good for a healthy and fit body.

Dr Arthur points out that there are biological causes for weight gain rather than oily food. Keeping the blood sugar level normal is the basic key to this theory. A normal level of blood sugar results in less or no urge to over eat the food stuffs which cause the gaining of weight.

This diet works in three phases. In the first phase (first two weeks) there is just intake of vegetables and meat, which is as rich as sugar free desserts. The basic idea is to strictly avoid carbohydrates and fats. After two weeks, the second phase begins. Small portions of carbohydrates are included in the diet during this phase. Even mono and unsaturated fats are introduced in this phase as they reduce the risk of heart attack and life threatening diseases like cancer.

Then comes the third phase, which is basically the maintenance of what has been achieved. It is a lifelong period. Gaining the weight again means return to phase one and then following the above diet pattern to reach the phase three again. Phase three is very important because it maintains the weight which has been achieved and this phase should become a normal way of life if you want to make the desired healthy and fit body a permanent thing. Adopt this diet after consulting your doctor and make sure the intake of water is at least 8 glasses a day. Calcium supplements should also be complemented while following this diet.
