The new food pyramid
December 29, 2008
The old food pyramid is quite well known with horizontal levels of bottom, middle and top. It has been helpful in providing a guideline as to our dietary requirements. However, it does not seem to be that effective with the fact that obesity in on an all time high these days. The government has realised that the technique of trying to generalise the whole diet thing is not such a good idea. Therefore, it has provided 12 different pyramids depending on the variety of age, gender, physical activity and things like these.
How does it work?
There are different pyramids for different people. You can easily access them on www.mypyramid.gov . Therefore, you have no way out.
The pyramids take into account your age, gender, level of physical activity and things like this. As a result, you have a customised pyramid of your own that; you can follow for a healthier life. Each pyramid comes with additional guidelines and suggestions of its own, such as how much oil you can take, how many servings of vegetables you will need.
The new pyramid focuses on exercise a lot. It gives specific recommendations as to how much exercise is needed for the individual. According to the new pyramid, you need at least half an hour of exercise if you want to reduce the risk of disease. If you want to prevent weight gain, you should go for at least an hour and you have to go an extra half hour if you want to maintain your weight loss.
Servings made simple
The old pyramid told us how many servings we need, but made no mention as to the exact size of the serving. This led to a lot of misconceptions. Now understanding the confusion, instead of servings, the new pyramid refers to cups, ounces or more such specific recommendations.
Advanced system
If you want a more detailed analysis of your eating habits and physical activity, there is a more advanced ‘My Pyramid Tracker’. This takes into account the effect of your height and weight in addition to your age and gender. This may sound a bit more complex. However, it provides more tailored information.
Reformation of Guidelines
A 70-page booklet named Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 is the basis for all these changes. A group of doctors and scientists have worked for this booklet to make 23 general recommendations and 18 special recommendations for children and the elderly.
Time to do something
While new guidelines are being published and newer systems being introduced to reduce obesity, only time will show whether or not Americans follow this new system and work towards a healthier future.
