The Muscle Building Diet
August 12, 2009
As a bodybuilder you will not reach your goals unless you eat the proper diet. Bodybuilders commonly divide their dietary intake into 40 percent carbohydrates, forty percent protein and 20 percent fat.
Bodybuilders eat six meals a day instead of three. They usually eat every three hours while awake. This aids in digestion and gives them a constant source of energy to draw from. It also fuels the metabolism.
Protein aids in the development of muscle because it contains amino acids. Good protein sources come from poultry, beans, legumes, lean meats, fish and eggs. An adequate amount is required to build muscle.
Carbohydrates are an immediate source for energy. Good sources for carbohydrates include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Fats should be monosaturated “the good fats.” Good fat sources come from walnuts, sunflower seeds, olives, flaxseed oil, olive oil and sunflower oil to name a few.
Usually the bodybuilder needs a surplus of calories to build muscle but sometimes the bodybuilder wants to take off some body fat so they would eat fewer calories. One pound is 3500 calories. So to gain a pound a week you would have to increase your calories by 500 a day to gain a pound.
There are calculations to help you figure out how many calories you should eat. You can estimate how many calories you will need based on how many calories you are eating now before you start your bodybuilding program.
Bodybuilders generally have a huge surplus of calories to gain muscle mass. Muscle burns more calories. It takes a lot of dedication and time to plan and follow a bodybuilder’s diet.
If you also do some kind of aerobic activity with your routine you will have to account for that in the amount of calories you eat. Aerobic activity burns calories and melts fat.
Muscle burns calories more efficiently than fat.
Bodybuilder need to stay hydrated. They need to drink a lot of water throughout the day and while they workout. This will also aid in digestion. These are the basic elements of a bodybuilder’s diet. The diet along with the workout and proper rest will help you get the muscle gains you want.

I like to cook a bunch of chicken breasts on sunday and then I’ll cut them up and carry some around with me in Tupperware wherever I go. This way I don’t ever spend money on fatty fast food.
