The Gut Brain Connection
Most of us have often experience wrenching in our stomach which is basically churning in gut. Many times we feel nauseous. The emotional reactions often trigger symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract. Nervousness, stress, mental problems, and other psychological factors can lead to severe symptoms in the gut. This is due to the fact that the brain and the gastrointestinal system are closely related to each other.
The digestion of food through the 30-foot-long digestive tract is monitored by an amazing communication system known as the enteric nervous system (ENS). This nerve complex is located in the gut wall, and connects as well as communicates with the brain via spinal cord, whereas, the hormones, neurotransmitters, and the central nervous system, mucosa, and blood vessels in the digestive tract influence the ENS.
The digestive system and the brain use chemicals called neurotransmitters to send electrochemical messages to each other by the nerves. The delicate and complex “gut-brain” system is almost equal in size and intricacy to the central nervous system of the body.
It has been shown by the studies that gastro-intestinal problems are not always due to the dysfunction of the bowel, but as a result of distractions in the brain-gut passage. The symptoms may be pain in stomach, contractions of the GI tract, uneasiness in body, giddiness etc.
So it has been proved that the brain has a direct effect on the stomach. The very thought of eating triggers the stomach juices even before food reaches the place. But the action is triggered in stomach as well as brain. A troubled intestine can stimulate the brain to produce symptoms, just as a troubled brain produces symptoms in the gut. A patient’s upset and distressed gut could be possible cause of depression or anxiety. So stay healthy we should have untroubled gut as well as brain.
