The Difference between Weight Training and Strength Training

April 10, 2009

weighttrainingstrengthIn the general category of strength training falls one form of exercise called weight training.  Weight training is done to build muscles, lose body fat and tone the body.  When weight training, participants can use different types of equipment including bars, weight racks and dumbbells.

The different types of equipment work different muscle groups.  Weight training is beneficial to both skinny people and overweight people.  Skinny people are able to build muscle while overweight people can lose body fat and get in shape.

There is a difference between weight training and strength training.  Weight training should not be confused with bodybuilding, power lifting or weight lifting.

These three are different forms of exercise.  Weight training is similar to these three other forms of exercise in that the person does use repetitions to build muscle and increase strength.

The difference is that strength training incorporates all forms of exercise that work to increase muscle strength.  Weight training is just one form of strength training.

It is important to consider your movements when weight training.  Your movements should be slow and continuous and not fast and jerky.  If you move incorrectly you can risk injury.  Those new to weight training should start off slow and focus on their body’s movement.

Newcomers to weight training should also seek help from a professional to make sure that they are doing the exercises correctly.  It is best to speak with your physician prior to starting any workout routine to find out what your body can handle.

Before you begin your weight training workout, warm up with about twenty minutes of aerobic exercises.  This will stretch your muscle groups and prepare them for the weight training session.  As you move through the exercises, make sure that your motions are smooth and controlled.

Quick, jerking movements can cause you to twist something or tear a muscle.  You also need to rest between each of the weight training exercises and remember to stretch once you are done.
