The BRAT diet
The BRAT diet is one that has been designed to help people who are suffering from chronic diarrhoea. In addition to helping with the diarrhoea, the BRAT diet has also helped people who are suffering from gastroenteritis and dyspepsia. The BRAT diet is ideal for anyone that is recovering from the flu.
What is the BRAT diet?
BRAT is an acronym for banana, rice, applesauce and toast; the four foods included in the diet, although some people also add yogurt to the diet. When you are using the BRAT diet to cure your gastrointestinal problems the only thing you should drink is water and plain tea. If your gastrointestinal troubles last for more than a day or so, you should add tofu and a protein supplement.
How to Introduce the BRAT diet
If you have been ill you should give your stomach a few hours to rest before you eat any foods. Once you feel up to it you should try to drink a little water. Even though your throat is probably parched you should resist the urge to gulp the water. Too much water hitting your stomach at once can over stimulate your stomach. You should sip at the water. Only drink a few sips every couple of minutes. If you are unable to keep the water down you should consult your doctor.
If the water stays down you can try some mashed up banana. When that stays down you can add the rice, toast, and applesauce.
You only need to stay on the BRAT diet for as long as it takes for your digestive problems to disappear. If your gastrointestinal problems don’t clear up within three days you need to consult your doctor.
Who Benefits from the BRAT diet?
The BRAT diet is recommended for women who are suffering from severe morning sickness during the early stages of pregnancy.
Pediatricians have started to prescribe the BRAT diet for toddlers with pernickety digestive systems, though they warn parents that the children still need to be exposed to foods that aren’t a part of the diet. Basically whenever your child’s digestive system seems to be normal you should encourage them to eat foods that aren’t on the BRAT diet.
