Taking Better Care of Your Joints

August 4, 2009

jointcareOne of the most popular supplements to take over the American market recently has been glucosamine. These are made from the shells of crustaceans like lobster, shrimp, and shells.

However, if you are allergic to shellfish, you can always take the variety that is made from vegetables. Glucosamine sulphate is derived from animals, while glucosamine hydrochloride is derived from plants. The former has been studied more widely than the latter.

Benefits of Glucosamine

Glucosamine supplements have many benefits associated with them. They are good at alleviating pain in the joints, while it also helps those suffering from osteoarthritis.

For best results, make sure you also supplement glucosamine with chrondoitin or MSM. MSM, much like glucosamine, is naturally produced by the body, whereas chrondoitin is derived from the cartilage of an animal, most commonly, shark.

Research on Glucosamine

There have been many studies done on the effectiveness of glucosamine when combined with other supplements. It was shown that those who suffered from severe or moderate osteoarthritis experienced a reduction in pain when they took a combination of glucosamine supplements and chrondoitin.

However, it was also shown that they would not be as effective if they were taken separately. A study that looked at the effectiveness of glucosamine coupled with MSM also revealed that they only complemented each other’s effects, and gave better results when it came to joint care. They both helped to reduce pain in the joints as well as swelling.

Another study done in Europe revealed that glucosamine supplements played a role in slowing down the progression of osteoarthritis. Those who took a dose of about 1500mg a day experienced a slower rate of progression of their osteoarthritis, when compared to those who were given a placebo.

This study was done over a period of three years. The group who were taking glucosamine supplements also reported that they experienced less stiffness, less pain, and better mobility of the joints.

Another study compared glucosamine with acetaminophen, which is a painkiller that can be obtained without a prescription. It showed that taking 3000mg of acetaminophen was less effective than taking half the amount of glucosamine daily, when it came to the reduction of joint pain.
