Start Getting Fit with Yoga Exercise

May 19, 2009

yogafitnEveryone wants to be fit, but very few Americans find ways to work physical exercise into their daily schedules. Even fewer make an effort to include times of meditation to ease their mental and emotional stress. Yoga can be the answer to both of these afflictions.

Physically, Yoga has a wealth of benefits. Its poses, called asanas, are intended to increase strength and flexibility. Some asanas are designed to increase muscular strength.

Others flex joints that are rarely used, increasing their natural lubrication. Tendons and ligaments, which can be very vulnerable to injury if rigid, also become more flexible and stronger through Yoga practice.

Yoga postures also massage all of the body’s organs, a fact that many people don’t know. Stimulating the organs, especially those that don’t get worked during more familiar forms of exercise, helps them detoxify, increasing their resistance to disease and infection.

In fact, Yoga is one of best detoxifying forms of exercise around. Yoga’s asanas stretch muscles and organs while increasing blood circulation. This helps release toxins that are flushed out via perspiration and cleansed from the bloodstream by the liver and kidneys.

At the same time, increased blood circulation provides better nourishment of both food and oxygen for the body. This keeps energy up and fights off aging.

Yoga also shapes and tones muscles beautifully. Regular Yoga practice also can help turn fat into muscle and even reduce weight. Recent scientific studies are showing more and more evidence that the emotional calm which yoga produces can be a strong weapon against America’s epidemic of obesity.

Truly, Yoga’s greatest benefit is that it harmonizes mind and body with one another. Yoga focuses on aligning breathing with physical movement, emphasizing awareness of body sensation. This concentration results in a clearer mind more in tune with a fit body.

When practiced properly and faithfully, yoga is really a form of physical meditation as much as physical exercise. The goal is to unify body, mind and spirit, to bring serenity into one’s life.

Yoga leads to emotional balance, a sense of being secure in one’s own person, with the ability to conquer whatever challenge life may throw. This attitude by itself can work wonders, as inner calm synchronizes with strong body to create a total person.

Learning and performing yoga regularly can work wonders in a person’s life. Perhaps it’s time to try it for yourself.
