Soy And Breast Cancer

July 7, 2008

Among all the functional foods, soy products certainly capture consumers’ attention. Soy products have received a lot of interest in the past few years. A variety of health benefits, including protection against breast cancer, have been attributed to soy food consumption, primarily because of the soybean isoflavones. Many soy foods are rich in phytoestrogens, natural chemicals that act like weak estrogen which is a hormone found in the female body and Isoflavones are one type of phytoestrogens.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. Breast cancer is related to hormones. Studies concludes Asian women have a breast cancer rate one-fifth that of Western women, and some research also suggests the lower rates are linked to consumption of soy, which is a staple of the Asian diet. There are also claims that it can replace hormone replacement therapy in menopausal women. Eating phytooestrogens is supposed to help reduce hot flushes, for example, during the menopause. In healthy women, eating phytooestrogens may lower your natural production of estrogen.

Even some researches say soy is very health beneficial. Many other researches conclude that soy is not the perfect one for the patients of breast cancer. American institute of cancer research stresses says soy and breast cancer are not conclusive, many things should be done before any dietary recommendation can be made. A few studies showed the estrogen-like effects in isoflavones may be harmful for women with breast cancer.

Now, this thing is still confusing rather soy is helpful for breast cancer patients or it hurts them.
