Some Dangerous Cooking Habits
June 10, 2009
When it comes to food and health, the most we hear about is eating habits. We are always being told to eat or not to eat certain food so that we can be healthy.
But the way we cook what we eat also determines the effect the food has on us. That is why we must check the dangerous cooking habits.
Aluminum utensils
Aluminum has an important role when it comes to the development of Alzheimer’s. Nobody knows exactly whether it is from the direct effect of the metal or not; or it happens as a result of a combination with other chemicals.
But there is one certain thing: if you use aluminum utensils, you put yourself at risk. The same thing is true about canned foods and drinks.
One way of remedying the situation, if you have aluminum utensils, is not to store the food in them for a long period.
Styrofoam
Foods should not be microwaved in Styrofoam containers. This is because they can melt. Styrofoam containers are safe when they are not heated. Because they are made of petroleum, they are carcinogenic in nature.
When microwaved, they may appear intact but parts of them can melt with each heating episode. To be safe don’t eat food heated in Styrofoam containers.
Open-flame grilling
When you eat burnt food, you increase your risk of having cancer. That is why it is not good to eat foods grilled on open-flames too often. Studies have revealed that charred meats may lead to cancer.
The only thing is that they are not among the top causes of cancer. Make sure you don’t place your food too close to the flames when grilling them. When it is charred, don’t eat it.
Microwaves
One of the possible risks of the microwave is the increase in the levels of bad cholesterol – LDL. This was the result of a research conducted by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University Institute of Biochemistry.
But most national agencies responsible for safety still insist that microwaves are safe. The middle line is not to use the microwave too often.
Generally, when cooking, make sure your hands and surroundings are clean. The problems mentioned above are long term, they are not immediate.
