Sleep and stroke
A research has found that sleeping too much and too little can elevate the risk of stroke.
Some researchers are convinced that it applies only to the postmenopausal women but other experts insist, sleep and stroke risk is universal.
There was a survey done on almost 93,000 women and found that women who regularly slept more than nine hours had a 60 percent to 70 percent higher risk of stroke than women who are sleeping seven hours a night. The possibility of stroke was 14 percent higher for women who are sleeping six hours or less regularly.
Most of the studies and researches have shown a link between unusual long sleep and an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure.
It has been stated by the health professionals that not only traditional risk factors such as cholesterol levels or high blood pressure are responsible for stroke, too much or too little sleep is equally harmful.
It is yet unanswered that why sleep affects stroke risk, but there could be some explanations. People who take long duration of sleep may have “ineffective sleep,” that is the unnoticed wakening intervals of sleep, sometimes due to the breathing disorder called sleep apnea leads to the possibility of strokes. People suffering from depression usually sleep longer. Depression runs the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
It has also been proved that quantity of sleep as well as the quality of sleep is equally important for healthy survival.
There are some reasons specific to postmenopausal women. Women who sleep less than six hours, studies have proved that it is injurious as plenty of stress hormones are released.
So, if you are not able to sleep long enough, try stress reduction and other methods to get more sleep. If you are unusually sleeping more than nine hours, discuss it with your doctor to lower the known risk factors for stroke, particularly high blood pressure.
