Skinny Holiday Dinner
December 17, 2008
Weight loss and leading a healthy lifestyle is all about making healthy choices, and the holiday period is no exception. There is no reason why you cannot enjoy the traditional feasts of the season but not completely blow all your good work. If you choose the foods to eat and keep portions under control, you will not miss out on the wonderful foods we all enjoy at this time of the year.
Here are some pointers to help keep you on the track:
• Choose white meat – when eating turkey, duck or chicken elect to eat the white meat and leave the dark meat for others. White meat has less fat and cholesterol than the darker meat in poultry.
• Eat extra vegetables – fill your plate with the colored veggies that are on the table. Avoid large portions of potato, but other vegetables will fill you up without making you feel bloated and uncomfortable.
• Leave the gravy in the jug – gravies contain a high proportion of fat, so pass on this favorite addition to the meal. You will find the food tastes good on its own anyway.
• Beware of hidden fats – stealth fat is in mashed potatoes, fried onions, vegetables cooked in butter. Limit the amount of these as you eat.
• Keep your portions small – this is perhaps the most important point to remember. You can enjoy the holiday feast but in moderation – eat a small helping of the foods you love but which you would normally avoid because of their high fat or sugar content. A small portion will satisfy your desire for the food and will not impact on your healthy lifestyle.
• Avoid the bread – a bread roll with butter contains too much fat and cholesterol for you, so leave them on the table. Eat some extra stuffing from the turkey which will have nuts and dried fruit and is a healthier option.
• Enjoy dessert – the dessert is sometimes the most traditional part of the holiday meal – pumpkin pie, Christmas pudding, ice-cream, trifle. You don’t have to deny yourself of these favorites; have a small portion and avoid the cream on top.
• Stick to your plan – make the decision to eat a healthier holiday meal and stick to it. Don’t allow other people to pressure you into having more than you need. You might even inspire someone else to make healthier choices.
• Walk it off – after the meal, go for a walk and invite others to join you. You will feel refreshed and not as drowsy as those who stuff themselves with too much fatty and sugary food.
