Side Effects of Fish Oil
Being recommended as a source of Omega 3 fatty acids, the popularity of fish oil has increased due to its various health claims. While fish oil is beneficial for the health of one’s heart, brain, eyes and for the overall health of the immune system, there are also some side effects of fish oil which need to be kept in mind before blindly moving towards its intake. Thus, this essential food item has a dual role as it is healthy but with few side effects and a thorough knowledge of it could help a person to effectively utilize this product for a healthy self.
It has been found that if a person takes large doses of supplements which contain high level of vitamins in addition to omega 3 fatty acids, then one is at a risk of vitamin poisoning. This is a condition which can lead to toxic conditions and thus one should use fish body oil in place of fish liver based oil to be on a safer side. Another side effect of fish oil is that it may lead to heavy metal poisoning since metals like mercury, dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls can be found in some species of fish. However, the risk of metal poisoning is associated more with direct intake of fish in comparison to its oil intake. In addition to the above risks, it has been found that high doses of fish oil can increase the risk of bleeding in the form of nosebleeds, strokes and blood in urine. Similarly, indigestion, heartburn and upset stomach are other side effects of fish oil. However, gastrointestinal side effects can be minimized if fish oils are taken with meals and if doses are started low and then gradually increased.
Since fish oil are an important source of omega 3 fatty acids which are required by the body, one should choose pure and quality fish oil supplements to minimize the risk of side effects. Choosing the supplements which are processed with molecular distillation is a good idea as it helps to filter out contaminants and pollutants from the product.
