Seniors Who are Active are Also More Healthy
Ensuring that they lead an active lifestyle is crucial for the health and wellbeing of seniors as well as everyone else. It is not late for those who do not have an active lifestyle to begin one, but they must check with their physician before making any life changing decisions.
Those who have chest pains, vertigo, joint pains, and heart problems should definitely consult their doctor before beginning an exercise routine.
Four Pillars of a Good Fitness Routine
There are four factors that seniors should take in to account when building their fitness routine. Activities that promote endurance such as walking, swimming, running, and hiking should be done for about half an hour daily.
To ensure that joints are strengthened, bone density is increased and muscle is built, one must engage in strength building exercises. Even taking up rowing or martial arts, helps with strengthening your body. This should be done at least three or five days a week.
To increase flexibility, one must engage in stretching exercises, dancing and yoga. Seniors should try to do about ten or fifteen minutes of stretching at the beginning of each exercise routine.
Another very important area to consider when building your fitness routine is balance. Improving your balance helps prevent falling, which could be dangerous for seniors. There are many things one can do to improve their balance, including activities like Tai Chi.
Reasons for Abandoning an Exercise Routine
There are many reasons why people find it difficult to work out. One is the lack of motivation, due to either being bored with what they are doing, or not seeing the expected results.
Therefore, people must always choose activities that they will enjoy and vary their exercise program and also have reasonable goals that are achievable.
The lack of time is also another impediment, but people must make sure that they make time for exercise. Another way to get over these problems is to workout with someone.
To keep yourself motivated make sure you treat yourself when you have achieved one of your goals. Staying healthy through exercise is a lifestyle choice, and one must change one’s lifestyle to make it more active.
For example, going out dancing sometimes instead of a restaurant, or taking a vacation that is active as opposed to one spent lounging around a swimming pool are choices that each of us should make. Remember, a lifestyle that is full of activity is the key to staying healthy.
