Exceeding these prescribed limits causes a lot of health problems. A high level of cholesterol causes fats to get deposited in the blood vessels.  These deposits, if allowed to accumulate, cause restricted blood flow and reduce the oxygen content in the bloodstream.

The main cause of increased cholesterol is a daily diet composed of processed foods that one eats, usually because of a hectic life pace.  Apart from the regular consumption of food rich in saturated fat like poultry, egg yolks and whole milk, dairy products further exacerbate the problem.

To protect yourself from heart ailments you should switch over to low cholesterol diets that have no or a minimum amount of saturated fats. Daily diets should be comprised of fat-free dairy products, plenty of vegetables and fruits, lean meats, fish and shellfish, and whole grain cereals.

Using olive oil as a salad dressing is very useful in reducing the levels of high cholesterol. Another helpful way to reduce cholesterol levels is to replace butter and saturated oils with vegetable oils, particularly sunflower oil.

Fiber rich foods like broccoli, green beans, and a variety of berries should form a part of the daily diet. Simultaneously one should restrict alcohol consumption and reduce tobacco use.

A judicious mix of food to achieve a balanced low cholesterol diet must be accompanied by a regular exercise routine to keep your weight under control.
