Salads

Salad is an eatable preparation of cold foods, which normally includes vegetables and fruits. It may or may not contain dressings, nuts or croutons. Sometimes there is an inclusion of meat, fish, pasta, cheese, or whole grains in the salad. It is mainly served as an appetizer before a heavier meal.

The green-salad is also known as garden-salad consists of the vegetables. It is prepared taking leafy vegetables or lettuce varieties such as rocket, spinach etc. as its base. When the salad leaves are chopped and tossed together it is called a tossed salad. It is a popular preparation of salads.

Some very popular and widely used vegetables present in this kind of salad are of cucumbers, carrots, spring onions, celery, mushrooms, radishes, peppers, onions, avocado, red onions etc. Other items may include tomatoes, pasta, olive, rice, roasted red peppers, sweet corn, green beans, artichoke hearts, black beans, croutons, hard boiled egg, cheeses, meat, fish, heart of palm, and cooked potatoes. These are not very common and sometimes added to salads. In a restaurant, there is a preparation of a small salad without meat, which is known as a dinner salad.

Sometimes the entree salads may consist of either grilled or fried chicken, chicken fingers as a topping of the salad.  Seafoods such as grilled or fried shrimp, or fish steaks, such as tuna, mahi-mahi, or salmon are also added as topping. Steak such as sirloin are grilled and sliced and served as the topping of the salad.

Some of the popular green salads are Caesar salad, Chef salad, Chinese chicken salad Cobb salad, Greek salad and Michigan salad, Spinach Salad.

Some of the popular dressings comprise of Creamy mayonnaise, Caesar dressing,
Balsamic vinegar, yogurt-based dressings, Bleu cheese or blue cheddar dressing Louis dressing, Ranch dressing, Russian dressing, lemon, Honey Dijon, soy sauce based dressings, Thousand Island dressing, Oil and vinegar, etc.
