Reduce Risk of Cancer with a Healthy Lifestyle
Cancer is one of the most dreaded diseases of our times and this illness can affect all major organs and tissues of the body and is known to strike in people of all age groups.
All though there is no conclusive evidence on the causes of this disease it is widely believed that lifestyle habits contribute to adverse cell mutations and free radicals within the body which leads to the growth of these malignant tumors. Discussed below are some healthy lifestyle habits that reduce Cancer risk.
Chewing tobacco and smoking are among the biggest risk factors leading to cancer of lung, mouth and throat. Quit smoking and chewing tobacco if you want to protect yourself from various cancers.
Alcohol consumption must be limited as too much alcohol regularly is known to increase the risk of liver cancer. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains is considered to be a great combat weapon in battling the free radicals leading to the growth of cancer cells in the body.
Ensure you have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage and fruits such as strawberry and oranges are known to have potent cancer fighting ingredients. Try and reduce your intake of foods that are salt-cured, smoked or nitrate-preserved, such as bacon, charcoal grilled foods, sausages, etc.
Being overweight and obese is a major contributing factor to breast cancer in women. Obesity is also known to increase the risk of cancers of pancreas, gall bladder, ovary and stomach. So, maintain an optimum weight by exercising for five days a week with a 30 to 45 minute workout.
Excess exposure to sunlight is responsible for skin cancer. Ensure you apply a sun block cream with a suitable SPF to protect yourself whenever you are likely to spend long hours in the sun.
Cancer if detected early responds well to treatment. So it is important to get routine screening procedures as mammograms, Pap smear tests and colonoscopies done regularly. These screening procedures do not minimize cancer risk but they help in the early detection of cancer and its successful treatment.

It was interesting you read about smoking and alcohol being a high risk for cancer. I am currently studying skin cancer and am researching a condition called actiic cheilitis which is a precancerous skin lesion that affects the lower lip. There is a strong link between smoking and alcohol consumption and actinic cheilitis, mainly due to the carginogenic chemicals. Alcohol can also increase the risk of melanoma and oral cancers affeting the pallat and oesophagus. Like everything in life, everything should be in moderation!
