Physical Activity To Reduce Cancer
January 29, 2009
Physical inactivity can increase your risk of cancer. It has been linked to cancer of the womb, colon, breast, lung and prostrate. You can reduce your cancer risk by half if you exercise regularly.
Breast cancer
If you are a couch potato and have a high body mass index, then you are at a double risk of cancer than other women who exercise and are not heavy. A normal body mass index is 25 is considered to be healthy for the women in the West, whereas it is unhealthy for Asian women.
Inactivity is a major risk factor for breast cancer among women. The normal level of exercise that is recommended is about 45 minutes of brisk walking everyday or 20 minutes of vigorous exercise everyday. Women who have remained inactive for most of their reproductive years have been more prone to breast cancer than the active ones.
Exercising regularly has shown to alter the menstrual cycle favorably. Estrogen levels are needed for reproductive development and health. However, higher levels can pose a risk for breast cancer. Exercise causes alterations, which lead to a decrease in the estrogen levels.
Being overweight is a known risk factor for developing postmenopausal breast cancer.
Exercise enhances the immune system and keeps it healthy to fight off cancer risks.
Endometrial cancer
Exercising women or otherwise physically active women showed 40% less risk of endometrial cancer compared to women who remained physically inactive for most of their life periods, in adolescence and adulthood. Postmenopausal women who have started exercising in later stages of adulthood also showed positive reductions in risk to cancer.
Lung cancer
Recent studies show that even heavy smokers can reduce their risk of lung cancer by increasing their physical activity. A vigorous physical activity session lasting for more than eight hours per week is recommended. Housework, yard work, regular walking, light repair work or carpentry and light sports are considered to be moderate activities whereas brisk walking, chopping wood and digging in the garden are the vigorous activities.
Colon cancer
Colon cancer and even precancerous changes in the colon pose little risk to people who exercise regularly. Exercise speeds up the digestive process. Hence, the bowel lining is exposed for a minimum time to harmful substances, thereby reducing the cancer risk.
Some healthy suggestions
You should deliberately include some physical activity in your daily life. You can easily do it by preferring the stairs to the elevator, by parking the car far, by avoiding labor saving devices like the remote control. You can also opt for active vacations and go dancing with friends.
