Perils of High Sodium (Salt) Diet

saltIf you want to live a long and healthy life, reduce a little sodium from your diet. A lot of people are aware of the fact that they need to reduce fat and salt but never do it. But it is imperative to have a check on the intake of sodium to lead a healthy life.

Salt is necessary to be healthy as it helps to balance the fluids in the body, which in turn influences the way the muscles contract and relax. It helps to send out nerve impulses, which only regulates our longing, cravings, and moods. On the other hand, it is essential to have in mind the suggested quantity of sodium, per day, which is from 1,500 milligrams to 2,400 milligrams.

A lot of issues arise when the salt content is high in the diet. The kidneys, removes the excess salt from the body by way of urine. When the salt level is very high it starts collecting in the blood instead of excreting and raises the amount of blood.

This results in more pressure in the veins. Hence, the heart has to work harder. When this happens, you are more prone to heart diseases or a stroke.

Those already suffering from kidney issues or high blood pressure are more susceptible than those who do not have such issues. But then it doesn’t matter who is consuming it, its better to have lesser salt in the diet.

So once you decide to reduce salt in your diet you have to first start having a look at the food labels, which mention the amount of salt in it. It can be a good realization.

Even sweet things will have a little bit of salt in them and you will actually be having a lot more salt than you imagine. Once you decide to move to a low sodium diet you will have to shift to foods that are loaded with potassium. This means you have to increase the intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

By moving to a low sodium diet you can definitely reduce the chances of having a stroke or some other heart disease.
