Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive degenerative disorder of central nervous system that often impairs the victim’s speech and other actions as well. It is characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement and in extreme cases, a loss of physical movement. Parkinson’s results from the degeneration of dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain, specifically in the substantial nigra and the locus coeruleus.
Symptoms- Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease varies from person to person. It can be caught very often at the first stage of the disease. Symptoms typically started on a particular side of the body and gives worst results on that side. Some of the common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are mentioned below:
Speech disorder- Most of the people having Parkinson’s disease have problem with speech. They may speak more softly, rapidly or in a monotone, sometimes slurring or repeating words, or hesitating before speaking.
Stiffness In muscles- Person having this disease sometimes faces a problem of rigid ness in muscles, stiffness and increased muscle tone. Sometimes it may combine with resting tremor that produces a ratchet.
Tremor- The characteristic shaking associated with Parkinson’s disease often begins in a hand. Pill-rolling, back and forth rubbing of your forefinger and thumb is common with the patient. However, many people with Parkinson’s disease do not experience substantial tremor.
Non- motor symptoms- Some of the common non-motor symptoms are diminished sense of smell, low voice volume, Painful foot cramps, Sleep disturbance, depression, constipation, drooling, sweat increment, Frequency in urine and also male erectile dysfunction.
Weakness of face and throat muscles- A Parkinson’s patient having weakness in muscles of face and throat. This may result to difficulty in swallowing and talking. The person may also choke, cough or drool.
Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease may appear at any age, but the average age of onset is 60. It is rare in people younger than 30 and risk increases with age. It is estimated that 5% to 10% of patients experience symptoms before the age of 40.
