Nutrition and Exercise Guidelines for Cancer Survivors

Cancer is a hard thing for anyone to try and overcome. It is hard on the person who is dealing with it, as well as their families. The importance of trying to stay healthy after you have been diagnosed is critical to living a longer life. Many cancer survivors end up overweight or obese from having a poor mental state.

You need to have a healthy diet and exercise in order to kick the cancer in the butt, so to speak. With all of the treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, it can become quite difficult to maintain a healthy diet when it seems as though food is the last thing on your mind. These treatments can also cause you to lose weight.

Some of the important factors when choosing what types of foods to eat are that you should include plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids, whole grains, the right amount of protein and plenty of veggies and fruits. Each one of these has its own specific benefit to your health. If you find that sitting down to 3 squares a day is difficult, trying eating smaller portions throughout the day to get the nutrients that you need.

Exercise is also an important factor. Different types of exercises will benefit you as well. In order to help improve your bone strength, resistance training can be quite beneficial to you. You also want to remember to stretch. Stretching exercises are a great way to keep your muscles from getting stiff and prohibiting your movement with pain and stiffness.

Before taking vitamins while you are going through treatment, you should talk to your doctor. Certain ones can affect your treatments differently and can hamper your recovery. If, for some reason, you are having a difficult time trying to eat, your physician may opt to feed you by intravenous tube or some other form of feeding. Remember, try to eat healthy and get as much physical activity as you can in order to get and stay healthy. You have the control and the power to overcome anything.
