Negative Effects of Caffeine

drinkingcoffeFor some people, coffee is a necessity; it stimulates the brain and makes individuals perform better.  Whether people are studying or working, coffee gives them a necessary boost.  It helps with concentration when trying to complete an activity.  It is the caffeine in coffee that gives us that boost.

The role of caffeine

Caffeine is referred to as a drug because it stimulates the nervous system.  Caffeine temporarily lifts energy levels and increases the pulse rate and blood pressure.

The negative effects of caffeine

Coffee is not recommended for people with heart problems as it greatly increases blood pressure.  Drinking strong coffee or drinking coffee too often can lead to many health issues, which at times can be fatal.

Caffeine can be very addictive, just like alcohol.  People who drink coffee in excess show signs of irritability and nervousness.  After many years of consumption of coffee, people may become immune to its stimulating effects and may not feel the boost that they used to get.  Some people have to drink coffee just to feel normal.

Coffee is the not the only beverage that contains caffeine.  Tea, soft drinks and energy drinks also contain caffeine.  Energy drinks contain more caffeine than coffee.  In fact, they are formulated to be stronger than coffee.

Energy drinks contain about 80mg of caffeine and other stimulating materials such as taurine which combine with caffeine to stimulate the body.

Recent studies have shown that energy drinks are not good for rehydration and should be avoided after taking part in sporting activities.  They may cause dehydration so they are not recommended after participating in sports.  Many people drink two to three cans in a row, which creates a surplus of caffeine in the body.

It is for this reason that all should be careful with the amount of caffeine they consume. Small amounts of caffeine will help temporarily boost your energy, but large amounts can lead to various health complications.  Caffeine is only safe when taken in moderation.
