Negative Calorie Diet

February 25, 2009

Believe it or not, you can actually lose weight while eating and not starving yourself.  The interesting part is that you eat more to lose weight.  How is this possible you may ask? The method of eating more to lose more is known as a negative calorie diet.

Here’s how the negative calorie diet works.  Eat a lot of negative calorie foods.  By overeating, so to speak, the calories that are needed to burn the food that you have eaten are greater than the calories found in the food you have eaten.  What that means is that the body has to exert more energy and calories than the food contains itself just to process the food.  It is believed that those who try and stick to the negative calorie diet can lose up to two pounds daily.

Now what is meant by a negative calorie food item?  Let’s start off by describing the typical food that you consume.  When you eat, your food items are comprised of carbohydrates, fats, protein, calories, and vitamins and minerals.

Here, the vitamins are responsible for processing the calories and nutrients.  With negative calorie food, the vitamins process both their own calories in addition to any extra calories that the body is storing.  Negative calorie foods are primarily water based.  They are made up of water, fiber, and non-caloric vitamins and minerals.

Two primary examples of negative calorie foods are fruits and vegetables.  On the negative calorie diet, dieters are encouraged to eat as much fruit and vegetable servings as they want.  Negative calorie foods make your stomach feel fuller faster.  Men participating on this diet should have about nine servings daily; women should have five.

Negative calorie vegetables include green vegetables such as asparagus (which works as a natural diuretic), broccoli, green beans, spinach, celery, cucumbers, and lettuce.  White vegetables include cabbage, cauliflower and onions.  Beets and roots such as turnips are part of the negative calorie diet as well.  Negative calorie seasonings include chicory, hot chili and garlic.

As for negative calorie fruits, berry fruits are big on the list such as blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, and raspberries.  Berries have antioxidants that allow oxygen into the blood stream.  Citrus fruits such as grapefruits and tangerines are part of the diet as well.  The basic thing to remember about negative calorie foods is that they are water based.
