Menopause And Weight Gain
Usually, your periods stop around the age of 50. The time, an year after this happens is termed as menopause. This is medical terminology. However, before this happens, your hormones are bound to take you on a ride every month.
Getting rid of excess weight or maintaining your present lean self, can become especially difficult when you are in the age group of 35-55 years. You might suddenly discover that your tummy is growing bigger and you are not able to do anything about it. Women who are either in or around their menopause years, undergo an approximate weight gain of 10-15 pounds.
Causes
Shift in estrogen levels
Estrogen levels undergo shift during this period. Ovaries stop producing estrogen. This can result in fat cells working to offset the effect of estrogen deficiency.
Reduction in physical activity
However, there is not so much of a relation between the two. It can be a possible reason for weight gain.
Increase in overall food intake
If you eat more, then it will definitely show up on your body, whether or not you are in menopause.
Slowing down of the metabolism
The metabolism becomes slower resulting in you requiring lesser calories for energy. The total amount of muscle becomes less. The fact is that more muscle means more burnt calories. Therefore, less amount of muscle will cause you to burn less amount of calories.
Genes
You can be genetically prone to weight gain. If that is the case, you will have to put in more work to keep up your figure.
Steps you can take to reduce the effects of menopause
You can make minor changes to your lifestyle in order to maintain your weight or to lose weight. You make a gradual decrease in your caloric intake so that it matches your body’s requirements.
The other thing you can do is increase your physical activity. Aerobic training and weight training can help you lose fat and build muscle, which will use up even more calories.
You can even keep a check on what you are eating by maintaining a food diary. This way you will know what you are eating and how much.
