Low Vitamin D Raises Womens Hip Fracture Risk
A research has revealed that deficiency of vitamin D can aggravate the risk for hip fracture in older women by more than 70 percent. The finding insists that people should take adequate amount of vitamin D, which is largely made by the skin when it is exposed to sunlight. The fact has been stated after the observation of the “fracture-vitamin D link” for 15 years. The finding implies that higher your vitamin D level in the body, lower is the risk of developing a hip fracture.
Hip fractures can be fatal for older individuals. It has been estimated that almost 50 percent of older people who suffer a hip fracture are admitted to the hospitals and 20 percent of patients die within the first year due to complications such as a pulmonary embolism.
A data was collected on 800 women aged 50 to 79 and these women were followed for up to nine years to determine their risk for hip fractures. It was found that the risk of hip fracture rose 33 percent with every 25 nanomoles per liter drop in vitamin D concentration. Women with comparatively lower levels of vitamin D had a 71 percent increased risk for hip fractures against women with higher levels of vitamin D. The low serum vitamin D levels, indicated an increased risk of hip fracture in particular community of women.
Vitamin D is so essential because it helps in absorption of calcium in the body, which is the primary component of bone health. Inadequate vitamin D level ultimately results in deficiency of calcium for bones, which causes fragile bones and fractures. Vitamin D also helps in keeping bone cells active. According to the U.S. Institute of Medicine, people should try to intake 200-400 international units of vitamin D a day. The best way to synthesize vitamin D is by going out in the sun.
