Low fat Christmas celebrations!

March 17, 2009

Christmas time or any festival time is tough time for those who want to reduce weight or prefer low fat food. The cakes, cookies and other special preparations like the turkey or pork are too tempting to skip. The fantastic parties and the fine drinks! How could one just be a monk at Christmas time?

There are ways to enjoy every bit of the holiday spirit without consuming too much fat or putting on extra weight at such times. It is just a matter of a little adjustment to get used to new concepts.

Search for light fat spread or butter, or use half butter and half spread when you bake. Search for Russian soured cream to use in sauces instead of traditional soured cream. And it is better still to use vegetable puree instead of cream to go with meat and starters. Use home made stocks and preparations instead of buying ready to eat cooked food.

There are many ways to substitute high fat food with healthy food like using a lot of fresh fruits to make your Christmas table bright. Salted and toasted almonds, pistachio, cashew nuts and peanuts are healthy and go well with drinks and as starters.

More than the starters and nibbles it is the main dishes that should be prepared with low fat content. Use only low calorie low fat versions of cooking medium and use minimum fat non vegetarian items such as chicken and fish instead of red meat and so on.

Side dishes too should be healthy instead of fat rich. Salads and a lot of streamed vegetables are best choice. There are scores of salad recipes that are low fat and look decorative on the table.
Avoid cream based sauces and use vegetable and fruit based ones to cut down fat.
Again fruit based deserts with raisins and crushed nuts would be novel and interesting.

It is a matter of wanting to cut down fat and it could be done with a lot of appealing style. And one area of Christmas feast has no substitute and that is the alcohol you may indulge in. The only thing you can do is exercise self restraint and control. Do not exceed the thirty ml. two pegs limit as recommended by the physicians all over the world.
