Lose Weight Using the Glycemic Index Diet

October 30, 2009

gidietMany people are finding weight loss success by following the glycemic index diet. This diet teaches people how to manage their blood sugar levels so as to avoid any spikes. The results are that a person is able to quickly and permanently lose weight.

This diet revolves around the glycemic index. The glycemic index is responsible for determining just how quickly a person’s body digests the food that is introduced to the body, which is then turned into glucose, also known as blood sugar.

Research now shows that when glucose is rapidly released in the body, it causes the body to react by storing sugar as fat in the body. The glycemic index is broken down into different foods, according to how quickly the foods break down in the body and release glucose.

Foods that break down quickly, rate high on the index. Foods that take a longer period of time to break down and release glucose are ranked lower on the glycemic index. To prevent gaining weight and to essentially lose weight rapidly, a person should eat a diet filled with foods that rank lower on the glycemic index.

Here is an example of foods that rank high and foods with lower rank on the glycemic index. The following foods rank low on the glycemic index because they release sugar slowly.

Most fruits, not including bananas and pineapples, contain fructose. Fructose is a slowly digested sugar. Therefore, almost all fruits rank low on the glycemic index. The same goes for most vegetables except carrots and corn. Vegetables are high in fiber and fiber digests slowly. Vegetables are low on the glycemic index as well.

The following foods rank high on the glycemic index because they release sugars quickly. Such foods include whole grains and foods high in starch such as pasta. Basically, anything that is a complex carbohydrate or made of white starch. Some of the highest foods are white bread and potatoes.

If you keep eating foods that rank high on the index you will gain weight over time, primarily because these foods release sugar quickly. Each time you eat something that is ranked high, your body is forced to produce more insulin.

Glucose joins the insulin and together they travel through the body. Insulin is also responsible for keeping your blood sugar level. But when you eat foods that are high on the glycemic index your body gets an overload of glucose and is unable to digest it fast enough. So it gets stored in the body’s fat cells.

The glycemic index diet was first created to help people with diabetes. Diabetics produce an excess amount of insulin.
