Leg injuries during sports

January 20, 2009

In the past 20 years, athletes have trained like never before and have adopted many supplements to help in muscle growth. In an effort to avoid some horrible sport injuries, athletes have adopted some immense pads, but sometime they cause as many injuries as they avoid.

The most incredible sport injuries are of the shoulder injuries, leg injuries, neck and head injuries and ankle sprains, and due to these injuries the athletes sometimes end up their career.

Sport injuries are not unusual but avoiding them, especially the most common sport injuries take a lot of time.

The highest injury rates in the sports are seen in professional football. Injuries are more common during the game as compared to during the practices. It is because the athletes play harder during the games and are more prone to risks.

There are basically two types of leg injuries: – ankle injury and knee injury.

Ankle injury is mostly common in football players. Ankle sprain are grade 1-3, based on severity. The less severe the sprain, the easy they are to manage, and the athletes return to play within several days to weeks. High ankle sprains are known as syndesmotic sprains. These are more severe and require casting for a short period of time.

For the ankle injuries, here are three common treatment strategies employed to help the prevention of reoccurrence. There are strength trainings to strengthen the muscles and ligaments that fix the ankle. Second is orthotic inserts, which is placed in the shoes to prevent injuries, by placing the foot in a neutral position. Third is proprioception training, which mainly include balance training and enhancing the ability of the ankle and foot structure to react to and control external forces.

Knee injuries come in many types. Quiet frequently, we see injuries to ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) or MCL (medical collateral ligament) or both. In addition, meniscus tears are also quite frequent, with either of both the injuries, but most commonly in ACL tear.

The anterior cruciate ligament is a ligament which connects the tibia (leg) to the femur (thigh). It also serves to protect the leg upon moving forward relative to the thigh. The anterior cruciate ligament is the center of the knee.

This ligament is generally injured in contact sports like football, soccer etc. usually the patient complains of a sudden injury in the knee and inability to walk. There is a noticeable amount of swelling that occurs right after the injury. In sports, this injury occurs when another player impacts the side of the knee.

Pain and immediate swelling are the early symptoms of ACL. Sometimes, patients complain of a popping sound which is actually a ligament tear sound. Instability and a loose knee are observed after the injury.
The after effects depend on the severity of the injury. Most of the time, the swelling takes several weeks to resolve. Offer the patients are able to function after their injury without any problem. However, the majority notice instability. For some people, this injury is a minor annoyment while for the others, it becomes a significant disability.

How to prevent leg injuries? :-
1-    Custom fitted orthetics help to improve pedal biomechanics, and prevents many activity-related leg injuries. Appropriate orthetic support to the patients who are involved in recreational activities, can lower their likelihood of developing leg injuries.
2-    Iliotibial band coordinates the muscles which provide balance, and provide support for the pelvis. This band should be used to avoid hip and thigh injuries.

Athletes must have regular evaluations of the alignment and function of their feet in order to avoid potentially disabling injuries. Addition prevention included the use of well designed shoes. Recommended orthotics, not only helps prevent arch breakdown and biomechanical foot problems, but numerous other injuries to the lower extremities.
