Knowing Those Etiquettes
November 4, 2008
Knowing the right etiquettes is very important. Those classic manners, mores and morals can simply reveal a lot of things about you and the standard of your life style. Here, I will deal about etiquettes to be followed during a formal dinner. If you are a host or being invited to a formal dinner, these tips can earn you kudos for your refined table manners.
Let’s start from the very beginning- when you should arrive at the venue. As the formal dinner always begins after seven o’clock (or it can be later), you should reach t at least five minutes before the hour set for the dinner. In case of unavoidable situation, you call your host and intimate him/her about the late coming with reason.
Now, it comes about how to sit at a formal dinner. Always remember, the host sits at one end of the table. If hostess is also present then she has to take the other end of the table. If you are a woman and has been invited then take your seat at the right of the host.
How to put dishes on the table for all courses? First, the service plate should be kept in the center of the cover. Now, on the top of service plate, all kind of dishes including for soup should be placed. Forks should always be at the left side of the plate, whereas, knives to be placed at the right side of the plate. Yes, you should put spoons at the right of knives. Let’s come to napkin. You can place them at the left of forks or on the service plate. Never reach for your napkin before your host or hostess goes for it. Always unfold it half and put it on your lap, with the fold facing towards you.
Many people get confused about how to hold fork and knives. If you are using both the knife and fork together while trying to cut and have a meat piece then hold your fork in left hand and the knife in the right hand. Once you cut a portion of meat, lay down the knife and again take the fork in the right hand and then have your food. This type of etiquette is usually followed by the Americans. But, in English or continental method, you hold the knife in the right hand even after cutting the meat. And you have to eat with the fork in the left hand.
When you are drinking anything on the dinner table, always look into the glass. Never scan around the room while you are drinking. When you are given a finger bowl at the end of the dinner, always dip only the tips of your fingers and that to one hand at a time.
Once you are done with the dinner that does not mean, you can leave the place. At least be there for thirty minutes and then you can depart.
