Tomatoes- the inevitable vegetable that we need to make almost all kind of recipes were unknown to people until 1800. People used to believe tomatoes are toxic, not edible, as they belong to the deadly nightshade family. The members of this family usually cause various deadly diseases to human beings.

That is the reason why, no one dared to eat tomatoes and it remained unknown till 1820, when an American named Colonel Robert Gibbon Johnson wanted to prove that tomatoes are not toxic. He ate a basket of them in front of his hometown people and afterwards, tomatoes have been integrated as a staple diet for Americans and the whole world as well.

With time, it has been proved that a tomato is no more a vegetable with toxins rather it is also the reservoir of many good qualities. Let me tell you some basic contents of tomatoes. They are rich in vitamin C, so they can provide you half the need of your daily requirement. Another important content is Vitamin A, potassium and iron. Due to its significant content of iron, especially women could be advantaged out of it significantly.

Do you know why tomatoes are red in colour? The presence of red pigment called lycopene is responsible for its red colour.

Now, let me tell you their advantages to health of the human beings. The contents present in tomatoes are great as antioxidant, which eventually help in neutralizing free radicals. Neutralization of body toxins is important or else they can cause massive damage to body cells in long term.

A recent study concerning tomatoes and their health benefits, has said that the lycopene present in tomatoes has the capacity to reduce the risk of lung, breast cancer.

Next time, when you are buying tomatoes, make sure to pick the ones, which have bright shade of red. The brighter is the shade the more you get betacarotene and lycopene.
