Is Your Gym Safe

November 28, 2008

You choose a gym that looks to be the one that will suit you and your needs and you expect that the management will have the necessary safety procedures in place. You go there to stay healthy, get fit and shape up but is your gym saboutaging your safety? Check your gym against these tips and see how it scores in providing you with a safe workout environment.

1.    Your gym is not clean… a gym environment, by its very nature, is a potential breeding ground for fungal infections like tinea and plantar warts. Bacteria and fungi thrive in warm, damp areas and the gym showers, pool and locker room are prime breeding grounds. Protect yourself by wearing something on your feet around these areas.

2.    The equipment is not maintained… look out for faulty or broken exercise machines. A busy gym gets a lot of work and equipment needs constant checking and maintenance. Don’t use a machine that is not working properly, and report it to the gym management immediately. If they have a casual attitude about it, find another gym.

3.    The instructor uses technical terminology that you can’t understand… this is not only irritating and frustrating, but it could also be dangerous if you don’t understand how to do an exercise or move correctly. Be responsible for your own safety and ask for clarity or more specific instructions. Don’t attempt a new exercise or machine if you are not completely clear on what to do.

4.    Trainers lack qualifications… find out what the minimum certification requirements are for the industry and ask whether all instructors hold these. The teacher may sound like they know what they are talking about, but that doesn’t mean they are fully trained and qualified. You don’t want to risk an injury because of unprofessional trainers.

5.   Teachers don’t talk about injury… in a class situation the teacher should explain a new move and talk about avoiding injury while performing it. A personal trainer needs to be aware of any pain you have or if you have difficulty in a certain area. There is usually a gentler or alternative way of doing the exercise that allows you to continue with the class. A good teacher will ask you pertinent questions.

6.    The class starts or ends abruptly... your muscles and joints need to be eased into a workout and it is vital to do warm up activities for a few minutes before starting high intensity work. If you stop high intensity exercise suddenly, you can feel lightheaded. Muscles need a chance to relax before you stop. Make sure you ease off or stretch for a few minutes before stopping – at least until your breathing returns to normal.
