Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism implies the underactivity of the thyroid gland in which the gland fails to produce enough hormones which are required for the optimum functioning of the body. This problem is generally characterized by weight gain, fatigue and memory loss and if left untreated, it can lead to a number of health problems like joint pain, infertility and even heart disease. This disease can be caused by a number of factors like iodine insufficiency, Hashimoto’s disease, thyroid removal, tumor on pituitary gland and even because of radiation on face, neck or chest. It is important to get your thyroid problem diagnosed as the disease can be treated through medications. It should not be left untreated as it can lead to further complications.
The symptoms of hypothyroidism can range from one feeling tired, weak and depressed along with development of dry and scaly skin, constipation, memory problems, muscle aches, pains, depression and even heavy or irregular menstrual problems in women. If hypothyroidism is left untreated, it can raise one’s cholesterol levels and can put one at risk for heart attack and stroke. Moreover, it can affect the entire immune system of the body and can make one feel tired and weak along with leading to the problem of obesity. Advanced hypothyroidism, known as myxedema, is rare but if it occurs, it can become life-threatening. It can lead to low blood pressure, decreased breathing, decreased body temperature and even coma.
Although hypothyroidism is more common in middle aged women, it can affect infants and teenagers also. While children display almost the same symptoms as adults, they can also have additional problems like poor and retarded growth, delayed puberty and even mental retardation. However, hypothyroidism is a problem which can be bought under control through proper medications. For that one needs to get it treated on time to avoid any further complications.
