How to Lose Weight

September 17, 2009

losingweghtForget about fad diets and weight loss supplements. They may promise that you can lose a great deal of weight without lifting a finger or making changes to your lifestyle, but the truth is, they don’t work.

Especially in the long run. There is no such thing as a magic weight loss program. Sure, you may lose the weight in the beginning but more often than not the weight will come back in the end. And then, the only thing that you have lost is the money in your wallet.

The truth is that there is really just one way to lose weight and it is the old fashioned way.

You need to make changes to the way you live your life which means that if you are inactive, you need to get active. And if you are eating unhealthy food or overeating, you need to replace your foods with healthy alternatives and stop eating so much.

To lose one pound of fat you need to burn approximately 3,500 calories. Or, if that does not seem possible, you need to eat 3,500 less calories each day. 3,500 calories may seem like a lot but if you break it down on a day-to-day basis it seems more practical. Each day you can assess how many calories you need to burn that day or how many calories you should cut.

Before you start cutting calories you need to find out the number of calories your body must get each day in order to function and stay at a healthy size. This number of calories is known as BMR or basal metabolic rate.

You can calculate your BMR on the internet with a specially designed calculator. This program will tell you how many calories your body needs each day to function. As you begin to drop the weight, your BMR will drop accordingly.

A BMR calculator will tell you exactly the number of calories that you are burning throughout the day. It will give you an idea of the number of calories you are burning when you are sleeping (yes, you burn calories while asleep), how many calories you burn at work, and during daily activities such as walking, weight lifting or cleaning the house.

Keep a daily journal that tracks your activity each day. This will help you monitor your BMR. You can even wear a heart rate monitor to tell you how many calories you are burning throughout the day.

In your journal you should also keep track of everything that you are eating and drinking. This will help you understand how many calories you eat each day. Food journals are a great way to monitor your eating habits.
