How to Lose Water Weight

April 1, 2009

losewaterweightRetaining water is a miserable experience. When you retain water, you usually feel bloated and cramped, and your ankles and calves start to swell. Some people even notice that their wrists swell and their face starts to get puffy.

There are several reasons why you might be retaining water. Women usually retain some water during their menstrual cycle; others retain water after eating salty food. Sometimes illness can cause water retention. Not drinking enough water can trigger the body to start retaining water.

Some prescription medications can cause you to start retaining water as well. Most of us are less concerned about the reason for the water retention and are more worried about how to shed the excess water.

Get Something to Drink

The best way to lose water weight is to actually drink more water. When you stop drinking water, your body actually starts to worry about when it will be getting another drink. It instinctively starts to protect itself from possible dehydration by hoarding the water it does have.

Drinking several glasses of water will help convince your body that it isn’t stuck in the middle of a desert somewhere, and it will shed its excess water weight. In addition to drinking water, you should try drinking things like green tea, cranberry juice, dandelion leaf tea, and apple cider vinegar, All are excellent choices when you are looking for a drink with diuretic qualities. Caffeinated drinks are also good choices when you are trying to shed water weight.

What Are You Eating?

If you notice that you routinely retain water, you should check your diet. People who eat a healthy balance of foods usually don’t retain water as often as people who exist on a diet of French fries and cheeseburgers. The next time you are hungry and need a snack, pass over the chocolate bar and grab an apple instead. One of the leading causes of water retention is a diet that is high in sodium. Foods that have diuretic qualities include lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, asparagus, cabbage, cucumbers, oats, and watercress.

Get Moving

When you are trying to shed water weight, you need to get up off the couch and get some exercise. Movement is a good way to reduce the swelling caused by water retention, and it will also get your heart pumping, which will help convince your body to get rid of the unnecessary water.
