How to Calculate Your Healthy Weight
Most of us want to maintain a healthy weight but we just don’t know how to do it. The first requirement in achieving a healthy weight is to know what constitutes a healthy weight for you as an individual. This is the first step to attain healthy weight.
It is natural to compare ourselves to others when we talk about weight instead of looking for objective standards to apply to ourselves. In today’s obese world, trying to find out what a healthy weight is by looking at the people coming out of a shopping mall would be an enterprise made in vain.
The method
The question then is how to determine what an ideal weight is.
We all have different bodies and body types, and there are many factors that influence our health. That makes setting an ideal weight for everyone a difficult undertaking. It is for that reason that providing a healthy range is a better option and more realistic for people who are same height but may have different body types.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
The Body Mass Index is a formula that simply tells you whether you fall within the range of weights that could be considered healthy for your height. The BMI is very useful because it indicates your body fat percentage. You only need to know your height and your weight to get your BMI.
Follow the following steps to calculate your BMI.
1. Measure your height in meters, and multiply it by itself.
2. Then measure your weight in kilograms.
3. Divide your weight by your height to find your BMI.
What it means
The resulting number is your BMI. Check it against the pre-set standards. If your BMI is less than 18.5 you are underweight; if it is between 18.5 and 25 you have an ideal weight; if it is between 25 and 30, you are overweight. While a BMI over 30 means you are obese, BMI over 40 indicates you are seriously obese.
Those who maintain their weight within the ideal range are enjoying a healthy life. But there are other factors that contribute to overall health such as cholesterol levels, body fat percentage and blood pressure.
