How to attain Healthy Nails

August 7, 2008

Everyone has a desire to flaunt long and beautifully painted nails. But this requires possessing strong and healthy nails as weak nails are brittle which easily chip off and act as a blot to one’s beauty. Along with looking beautiful, nails are also a signifier of one’s internal hygienic conditions and thus one should take proper care and protection of them to display one’s healthy side to the world.

Everyone knows that a well balanced and a nutritious diet is required for the health and strength of one’s body. But this golden rule applies for one’s nails as well as most of the problems associated with nails are due to nutrients deficiency in the body. Every nutrient is essential for the health of one’s nail and thus an optimum diet should consist of all the necessary vitamins, minerals and supplements like vitamin A, Vitamin C, calcium, folic acid, Vitamin B12, protein and zinc. People with dry, weak and brittle nails should increase their intake of Vitamin A and calcium. Similarly, deficiency of hydrochloric acid can cause nails to split while the deficiency of vitamin B12 can lead to dryness and darkening of nails. Thus, one should ensure that all these nutrients are present in one’s diet as they aid in the health and strength of one’s nails. In addition, vitamin E supplements help the nails to grow long and strong and thus they should make an essential entry into one’s daily diet.

Along with consuming a healthy and a nutritious diet, one needs to take certain caution and precaution to ensure the health of one’s nails. These include watching out for signs of nail infection characterized by redness, pain or pus which can be caused by poor cosmetic application. For instance, many nail problems can be caused by nail polishes which waterproof the nails and cause the skin under them to stay wet for a longer time making them more vulnerable to infections. Similarly the chemicals found in some of the nail hardeners can be harmful as they can lead to the occurrence of rashes on fingers.

There are certain natural ways available for the strengthening of one’s nails. These include soaking one’s nails in lemon juice for 15 minutes everyday or blanching lemon grass and drinking it several times a day. A regular intake of healthy and a balanced diet along with some simple and natural treatments can ensure that one has healthy and strong nails which in turn can add shine and glow to one’s beauty.
