How Does the Atkins Weight Loss Diet Work

The Atkins weight loss program was designed and developed by Dr. Atkins. The diet works on the premise that one should reduce the intake of carbohydrates.
This plan is now recognized as a popular means of weight loss. Exercise is not part of this program, but one can continue with low to moderate exercises to complement the diet.
The Diet aims at reducing the intake of processed and refined food and substituting it with nutritious, low carbohydrate intake. The diet is based on the assumptions that weight gain is caused by excess carbohydrates.
The premise of the diet is hypersensitivity to carbohydrates. The diet also declares that overweight people have insulin resistance in their body.
The diet works in 4 steps of induction, weight loss, pre maintenance and maintenance.
These steps are in sequential order. The first step is to prepare the body for the diet. The next step is to decrease the consumption of carbohydrates. This makes the body use up stored fat reserves for energy. The process is called Ketosis. During this process, the insulin levels in the body get regulated to prevent further fat storage.
Once the body has figured how to efficiently use its fat and carbohydrate consumption and convert it to energy, it stops craving carbohydrates. The main basis of this diet is to completely avoid pre packaged and processed food and junk food.
A good diet should contain copious amounts of protein. Limiting carbohydrates makes it easier and faster to lose weight when compared to other diet plans and fitness programs.
The induction phase is normally considered the toughest part. AT this stage the body is subject to less than 40 grams of carbohydrates and this can be stressful for the body. It takes dome time getting used to. It may even take a couple of weeks before getting to the next steps.
