Herbs offering sun protection

January 14, 2009

There is no doubt that sun is the source of life in the planet, and no living organism can survive without the sun.

But at the same time this sun is causing enormous damage to your skin. Too much exposure to the sun can lead to tan, burn and even skin cancer. Prevention is always better than cure and you can prevent sun damages by using a good sun block or sunscreen. But then again, sometimes we do get affected by the sun. Here is where nature comes in help. Nature has verities of herbs that can help you protect your skin from sun damage.

When it comes to sun damage and herbs the first name that comes to mind is aloe vera. It protects the skin from the damage sun can cause. Since it is natural, so there is hardly any chance of adverse effect. Since time memorial, people have used this natural product for skin care. In ancient Greece doctors referred to aloe vera as a miracle plant. Just apply the juice of aloe vera after your skin is exposed to the sun. Aloe vera has many qualities — it moisturizes the skin and it is also anti-inflammatory.

You can easily find aloe vera gel in the market. You can also buy the plant and extract the gel and apply it to your skin. Cut the leaf open and extract the gel and apply it to your skin.

Another remedy for sun damage is green tea. It is a popular drink with medicinal qualities. You can either have it as a drink or can also apply topically. Green tea is an excellent anti oxidant. A study shows that the anti oxidant power of green tea is 20 times stronger than vitamin E. You could actually apply this drink on your skin as a sunscreen. Mix the green tea formula with any zinc-oxide bases sunscreen and then apply.

Another natural ingredient that can protect your skin form sun damage is calendula. Other than that you can also use sesame oil.

It is thru that herbs are natural, thus they should not have any adverse effect on the skin. But yet again it is better to apply a small amount on your skin and see if you are allergic to it or not.
