Healthy eating with fruits and vegetables

February 17, 2009

Diet gurus give a recommendation of eating a minimum of five servings everyday of vegetables and fruits. There is no denying the fact that vegetables and fruits are not only nutritious but also an inevitable part of any healthy diet.

Eating these will improve your health besides helping you fight various other health problems.

Some of the benefits that you gain when you eat these are enlisted below.

They go well with any meal
You can combine vegetables as well as fruits with any meal. They are available in a variety of flavours, colours and textures and hence, it is not difficult to include them in almost any meal.

They are full of nutrients
Vegetables and fruits are great sources of several essential minerals and vitamins. Some of these are also sources of micronutrients that you will not find even in vitamin supplements. Some foods like pumpkins, mangoes, carrots, peach as well as green and leafy vegetables are rich sources of beta-carotene, which helps to nourish your skin as well as eyes.

Some vegetables and most of the fruits, especially citrus fruits, are great sources of vitamin C. This antioxidant fights off free radicals and keeps you from developing cancer.

Green vegetables like broccoli, spinach and avocadoes have loads of vitamin E, which is also an antioxidant.

They are useful in pregnancy
When a woman is pregnant, she will need to have proper nutrition. Even before the mother realises she is pregnant, the baby still needs nutrition.

The one nutrient that is very essential during pregnancies is folic acid. Brussels sprouts, spinach, oranges and broccoli are rich in folic acid. This essential nutrient helps in preventing several birth defects like Spina Bifida.

They are a great source of dietary fiber
Fiber is of plant origin and you cannot get it from meats. Vegetables and fruits are a great way to fulfil your dietary fiber requirements.

Fiber is required to maintain the health of your digestive tract and for a smooth digestion process.

They are low in fat
This can be a great incentive for you to have them in abundance. Not only are they low in fat, but they are rich in other nutrients and will also make you feel fuller for a longer time.

So, have a great time eating your fruits and vegetables.
