Healthy Eating – Cooking Tips
February 16, 2009
You can have all your eating habits to be healthy, however, if the food that you are eating is not healthy enough, then these good habits will not go far to help you out.
You can make some small adjustments in your cooking styles and techniques to give you healthy and delicious tasting food. The government insists that Americans take a minimum of 5 servings every day of fruits and vegetables. While they are not a favourite among most of us, they are a requirement and when you think of it, it is not that difficult to include some nice and healthy veggies and fruits in our daily diet.
Here are some tips that will help you do that in a healthy way.
Microwave oven tips
Microwaves have entered our kitchens and are making life easier for us everyday. These little boxes can actually make cooking fruits and veggies easier and much more fun.
You can easily steam up your vegetables in a microwavable bowl or a pressure cooker that can be used in a microwave. This will keep all the nutrients intact. Steaming will eliminate the need of frying, thereby reducing several calories in one go. You can make some delicious baked potatoes using the microwave oven.
Have a bake potato with nice and hot steamed broccoli, and you will be on your way to enjoying your vegetables, instead of griping about them.
Grill some tips
The grill is one more kitchen appliance that will help you reduce the use of oil or butter. Simply grill some delicious red or green peppers, pineapple chunks and your deliciously colourful kebabs are ready to eat.
You can have them as they are or combine them with lean meat cuts. They do make a wonderful treat for you while also making sure that you are eating healthy.
Blend in some health
Blenders are a blessing for making those wonderful breakfast smoothies. Any fruits like nectarines, peaches, oranges, strawberries along with ice and some fruit juice will make up some mean smoothies that will last you till lunch. They also a great option to coffee that only adds more caffeine.
Make up a fruit salad
Mix up a banana, some oranges, an apple, some berries like blueberries or strawberries and some raisins. Your delicious fruits salad is ready and all you need is 5 minutes to prepare it.
Make some small additions
You can simply include these vegetables as well as fruits in your daily cooking. For example, you can throw in some peppers in your pizza toppings, some bananas or strawberries in your cereal or yoghurt.
Simply be creative and you will easily come up with ways you can do this.

I think replacing all butter with heart healthy oils like olive and canola have really been helpful for me.
Also, when cooking vegetables you can often even substitute oil for low sodium chicken or beef broth and save a ton of fat and calories.
