Healthy Brown Bag Lunch

We all want to eat healthy diets, but sometimes it can be difficult to know if your diet is healthy enough. One of the biggest challenges in enjoying a healthy lifestyle is making meals on the go. It is even more difficult when children are included in brown bagging. It is however possible to make nutritious and delicious brown bags that the whole family will enjoy. The most essential thing is choosing which kind of food that goes into your brown bag.

What you can do is to choose foods that can easily be put together.  You must also include foods that everyone in the family would like.

A Guide for Healthy Brown Bag Lunch
When preparing a healthy brown bag lunch for your family and yourself, try to include at least three choices from the list below.

1.    There should be a whole grain product such as bread, pasta or muffins.

2.    There should be at least one fruit or vegetable. Oranges, apples and bananas are great options.

3.    Meat, fish, eggs, poultry or peanut butter should also be included.

4.    There should be milk or dairy products like yogurt, cheese, skim milk or yogurt drink.

5.    There could also be a fruit or vegetable salad.

One great way of making a brown bag for all is to involve all members of the family in its preparation. You can provide the ingredients for every member of the family to make his/her own brown bag. Each person chooses his/her favourite from the groups of food you make available.

Suggestions
It is good to have variety in your brown bags. There are a few suggestions that you can follow to succeed in this area.

1.    You can use a variety of breads for your sandwiches. There are other bread alternatives like bread sticks, tortilla wraps, and whole wheat crackers.

2.    You must use 100% fruit juice. Fruit juice drinks that contain less than 10% of natural fruit should be avoided.

3.    There should be a variety of dried fruit juice in the brown bag you propose for your family.

4.    Make sure you buy a selection of flavours of non-fat or low fat yogurt every week, and let everyone choose his/her favourite flavour every day.

The idea of brown bags is not only for kids; mom and dads can also join in the fun. They are low cost yet very nutritious and delicious.
