Healthiest Meats to Eat

In a recent study the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) reveals that people who eat just 283 grams of red meat a week are likely to develop cancer of the colon than those who don’t eat it. Steak is mouth-watering, but there are a lot of tasty alternatives. Below are some of these healthy meats.

Buffalo (Bison)
White meat is never a good substitute for red meat. But buffalo is. One can say it is the reddest meat you can get apart from beef, and it is pretty tasty too. Since buffalos are mostly grass fed, bison is much healthier than beef. It contains less fat than beef, and can be used in burgers. We are not talking about wild buffalos here. Buffalos are now being reared on ranches and their meat is readily available in grocery stores.

Pork
Pork used to be considered unhealthy sometime ago. But today it has become one of the healthiest alternatives to red meat. Pork is not as low in fat as compared to chicken and fish but it can be lean. When eaten reasonably pork will not harm you.

Chicken
Chicken without the skin when it is not deep fried is low in fat and is far better than red meat. It is a good source of protein but also less expensive. There is the risk of E. coli infection with chicken but cooking it thoroughly will kill all the bugs in it. Charred grilled chicken can also contain some chemicals responsible for causing cancer. You just have to limit your consumption of well blackened chicken.

Fish
A properly cooked fish like tuna and salmon are as good as a hunk of red meat. Fish is very high in omega 3 fatty acids which help in blood circulation thus preventing coronary and cardiovascular disease. Some studies reveal that the risk of developing colon cancer is very low in those who eat fish than those who eat red meat. But certain large fish like tuna and shark could contain mercury which is very dangerous.
All said the best option is moderation. Eating too much of a good thing is as bad as eating the bad thing.
