Health Benefits of Whole Grains
To achieve and sustain a healthy life, one requires a well balanced and an optimum diet. Whole grains play an important role in the overall health of a person and a grain is considered as whole when all the parts like bran, germ and endosperm are present. According to research, consuming whole grains daily can help in a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancers and most importantly, whole grains help in the smooth and optimum functioning of the digestive system.
One should get into the healthy habit of consuming whole grains because the bran and germ components are particularly rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and healthy fats. These essential parts get removed in the refining process which in turn makes the food poor in nutrient value. There are various benefits associated with the intake of whole grains. They have shown to reduce the risk of heart disease by decreasing cholesterol levels, blood pressure and blood coagulation. They are also beneficial for people with diabetes as they help in regulating blood glucose levels along with providing protection from various kinds of cancer. Thus one should consume whole grain foods like wild rice, popcorn, oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat and barley amongst others.
Instead of going in for nutrient supplements, one should increase the intake of whole grains to fulfill the nutrient demand of the body. An easy way to increase whole grain intake is by replacing some of your refined-grain products with whole grain ones. Thus, one should try to replace your white bread with a slice of whole grain bread or try having a serving of whole grain breakfast cereal in the breakfast. Instead of indulging in unhealthy snacks like chips, one should go in for popcorns to fulfill the nutrient demand of the body. Thus, including whole grains in one’s diet is an extremely healthy idea as it ensures the overall well-being of a person.
