January 20, 2009
Any person watching sports is generally aware that a “pulled hamstring” is a worrying condition for athletes, cricketers, tennis players or even any sports where running is concerned. “Hamstring” is in fact a collection of three muscles which help in straightening or extension of the leg at hip and bend leg at knee. Basically, the “pull” is a tear or strain in the tendons or muscles.
A pull in hamstring or even a pulled hamstring as it is occasionally called is a strain or tear in one of the muscles of hamstrings (Semimembranosus, Biceps femoris and Semitendinosus). It often results from trying to move muscles very fast or an overwork of the muscles. They generally range from a total break of the muscle to a small micro tears that the player might probably do not become aware of at the time.
Occurrence of Hamstring Pull
A hamstring pull might occur during a remote player activity (severe) or even outcome of constant recurring stress (chronic). Frequently an acute strain happens due to a result of an unceasing situation which has made the muscle weak and also vulnerable.
If we consider a case of a cricket player, hamstring pull frequently occur while running between the wickets. They also may occur during fielding and certain other activities requiring quick starts and stops like balling. The key high risk sporting events for hamstring pulls are: football, soccer, softball, basketball, baseball, and several other track and field events.
Symptoms include:
• An unexpected acute pain at the back side of the leg
• Muscles going into vibration or spasm
• Bruising and Swelling
Based on their seriousness the various pulls may be graded as Grade 1, Grade 2 or Grade 3:
Grade 1:
• May observe tightness in thigh
• Might be capable of walking correctly
• Perhaps would not have a lot of swelling
Grade 2:
• Perhaps may not walk correctly

• Might notice swelling
Grade 3:
• Not capable of walking correctly without aid of the crutches
• In serious pain
• Awful swelling may come out straight away
Preventing hamstring Pull
• Usual profound tissue sports massage may help preventing the muscle pulls by recognizing the stretched knots and weak ends in the muscle.
• Strengthening and conditioning the muscles but not only hamstring muscles but the lower back also.
Overall, it is not necessary that the hamstring pull is faced only by the sports persons then one is probably wrong since there may be various reasons for a hamstring pull such as overdoing yoga exercises.
