Hair Care Tips
We all want to have shiny, strong hair. We buy creams, chemical, special brushes and expensive, complicated tools. But too many of us are starting in the wrong place, with our hair itself.
The truth is, to have healthy hair you have to start at the base, with a healthy scalp. Shampoos, conditioners, and creams can all cover up damage to the hair, but many hair problems need to be dealt with at the scalp. Too many people are treating their hair, when they need to be paying more attention to their scalps.
Oily scalp
To best care for you scalp, you first need to understand what sort of needs it has. Is your scalp oily? Oily scalps cause oily, sticky hair. Dirt and dust can stick to your hair and scalp, and cause you hair to be heavy and lank.
The dirt can even form layers on your scalp and hinder good circulation. People with oily scalps should wash their hair frequently, at least every other day. If you use conditioners, apply them just to the ends of your hair. This method will keep your hair moisturized without adding too much extra oil to the scalp.
Dry scalp
People with dry scalps don’t need to wash as frequently. Shampoo strips away oils, which can make a dry scalp even drier, so dry scalps should be washed less often.
Hot water can also increase scalp dryness, so try to keep your water lukewarm. Heat from hairdryers will aggravate your scalp and intensify dryness, so do your best to keep blow drying to a minimum.
If your style demands that you blow dry, try using a leave-in moisturizer to help protect your scalp, or consider changing your style. Exfoliating the scalp with a gentle scrub before washing will help remove dead layers of skin. Moisturizers can help reduced dryness. Choose one that is right for you, and massage it well into your scalp.
Encourage a healthy scalp
Regardless of your hair type, you must remember to care for your scalp. Massage your scalp while you wash your hair, using a firm and steady, circular motion.
This will encourage good blood flow as well as relax your nerves. It also helps keep the scalp healthy and flexible. Remember, good hair starts at the scalp.
