Hair is the crowning glory of a person. It enhances the personality and frames the face to give it a complete look. Each person’s hair is different in colour and texture. Some people are born with curly hair; some have straight hair and some people possess a thick mane, whereas others may have thin and scanty growth.
Many factors are responsible for this variation. It can be genetic, climatic conditions or may be due to particular regions.
Like skin, hair also need proper care to maintain its growth and health. Healthy hair are shiny and glossy, they have a bounce and volume.
There are three types of hair-
• Oily hair
• Dry hair
• Normal hair
Common hair problems which afflicts all type of hair
Dandruff and excessive hair fall are most common among them. The reason for dandruff is invariably improper care of hair, like irregular washing or oiling of hair. Excessive hair fall may be due to side effects of some medicine or hormonal imbalance, thyroid problem also aggravates hair fall. Lack of proper diet is also a major cause of poor hair health.
Hair care involves internal and external care. Internal care provides nourishment to the roots of hair from inside. It is achieved by taking a balanced diet. Hair reflects your inner health. You may use the most expensive shampoo, conditioner or hair oil but the quality of hair will not improve till it is combined with a balanced diet. Unhealthy hair looks dry, brittle, and lifeless and without any sheen. You must take proper diet to maintain healthy and problem free hair.
Diet for healthy hair
Protein rich diet is most essential for hair.Eggs, milk; yogurt, cottage cheese, fish, beans, nuts etc. are high in their protein content. Include them in your daily diet. Almonds are especially good for hair, soak 5-10 almonds overnight and in the morning peel them and eat.
Fresh fruits and vegetables provide the required amount of vitamins, minerals for hair. Eat them as salads, soups, juices.
Iron is also necessary to maintain healthy hair. It removes brittleness of the hair and makes it silky. Green leafy vegetables like spinach, fresh fenugreek etc. are good source of iron.
Drink plenty of water to keep your mane hyderated.Lack of moisture makes hair look dull and lifeless. Avoid oily food, aerated and caffeine rich drinks.
External care consists of regular hair massage, proper shampooing and condition of hair. Application of hair packs at least twice a month to nourish the roots and strands.
Massage – Massage is essential for all types of hair to stimulate blood circulation in the scalp. A good oil massage removes dryness of the scalp and also prevents the growth of dandruff. You can use coconut oil, olive oil, amla oil, almond oil castor oil or herbal hair oil for head massage.
Always use your finger tips to massage hair, starting from the bottom of neck move upwards with gentle but firm circular motion. Do not use your palms to rub vigorously, as it will cause damage to the roots and result in breakage of hair.
Care for oily hair
Oily hair is prone to scalp infections due to excessive oil secretion in the scalp. It needs regular cleansing and you should not let dirt or sweat clog the roots. Massage your hair with a light oil like coconut or amla hair oil at least half an hour before shampoo.
Shampoo for oily hair – Shampoo your hair as soon as you notice your hair sticking to the scalp and going limp. It happens more frequently in summers and humid weather. You should use lemon based or clear shampoo for oily hair. It helps to remove the excess oil from the roots and makes hair fluffy.
Conditioner – Conditioner gives hair a body and makes them more manageable. You should use light conditioner instead of cream based conditioner for oily hair. You can use homemade conditioners also. Mix the juice of one lemon with water and use for last rinse.
Lemon will give shine to the hair. Flat beer also makes a good conditioner for oily hair. Rinse hair with a glassful of flat beer after shampoo and wash with normal water. Mix two table spoon of vinegar in a glass of water and use as a last rinse to condition the hair.
Hair pack -Take half cup gram flour, half cup shikakai powder,2 teaspoon dry fenugreek powder, juice of one lemon. Make a paste with water and whey. Apply on hair for at least 30 minutes. Wash thoroughly. Use this pack at least once a month. Gram flour helps to remove dandruff and makes hair soft.
Make a paste with amla powder and curds. Add juice of one lemon. Use as above. You can shampoo your hair with a mild shampoo after using hair pack to clean hair thoroughly.
Care for Dry hair
Dry hair is prone to brittleness and have a rough texture. They tend to break if not taken proper care. Dry hair may have flaky dandruff that can affect your facial skin and cause acne. You need to massage dry hair regularly. Olive oil and castor oil are suitable for dry hair. You should warm the oil a little so that it spreads easily.
Shampoo –Excessive shampooing cause damage to dry hair. Shampoo your hair once a week or at the most twice a week if you have dry hair. Use a cream based shampoo to retain oil in the scalp and strand.
Conditioner -You should a cream based conditioner for dry hair.
Hair pack – Beat an egg, mix shikakai powder, henna powder in it to make a paste. Apply for half an hour .wash thoroughly with normal water. Oil your hair afterwards if it feels dry. Banana is a good for nourishing hair.
Mash one banana, add one teaspoon almond oil to make a paste, apply on hair for half an hour. Wash with normal water. Use shampoo if needed.
Normal hair is problem free hair type. You need to keep them clean and healthy by regular massage,shampoo and conditioning.
Tips – Harsh sun rays can cause dryness and damage to hair texture, always cover your head with a scarf or carry an umbrella when going out. Get your hair trimmed regularly to prevent split ends.
