Green Tea – Expensive Scam or Elixir of Longer Life

June 16, 2009

greenteaGreen tea, an elixir for longer life comes at a higher price compared to regular black tea. It is almost 4 times as expensive as black tea. It makes us wonder if it is really worth the money paid or if it is some sort of marketing gimmick.

Green and black teas are harvested from the same plant. Green tea is however said to have far higher health benefits in terms of delaying aging, preventing cancer, lowering cholesterol and regulating blood sugar.

Black tea while having antioxidant properties also has high caffeine content and appears to be a dull cousin to green tea. The flavor and properties of the tea come from the processing that it undergoes prior to reaching your table.

Processing being the key differentiator, it pays to understand the subtle differences in the production process. Black tea is fermented and then processed.

Green tea on the other hand is picked, dried and processed. This way, it retains a light flavor unlike the strong flavor that comes with fermenting black tea. In the green tea processing, all the health benefits are best retained.

Green tea is consumed as is. Like wine, it is an acquired taste. It has a unique burnt flavor. Black tea may be had with milk and sugar and has a far stronger flavor. Once you develop a taste for green tea, it can easily substitute your daily coffee and tea intake. Its taste is akin to a glass of hot water with some lemon squeezed in it, albeit stronger.

Green tea can be brewed at home; the technique though is slightly different from black tea. It is a more considered process. Water needs to boil and sit for a few minutes. It is then poured over the tea bag – one tea bag per cup is recommended. You should then allow for the favors to come together by waiting another 3 minutes at the end of which it is ready to drink!

You may have as many as up to 20 cups a day. The other way is to simply, replace the daily consumption of tea or coffee with green tea to derive its varied benefits.
